Rusty Duncan, a former president of the Industrial Distribution Association and former owner of Industrial Market Information, passed away on July 20.
Rusty DuncanHe was 69. Duncan got his start in the distribution industry in the family-owned Duncan Company in Minneapolis, where he eventually became president. Known as an advocate for the industry, Duncan served as president of I.D.A. in 1989-1990.
He left the family business to launch Industrial Market Information in the 1980s, and became publisher of the industry newsletter Modern Distribution Management (MDM) in the 1990s.
IMI was eventually merged into MDM and was rebranded as MDM Analytics.
MDM owner and publisher Tom Gale remembered his former business partner and friend in a tribute published at MDM.
“Rusty was a creative and analytic thinker, and more often than not, would bring a comment from somewhere out in left field into a conversation, often with a quiet touch of humor. It would challenge your thinking or an assumption you held. And that’s why he developed so many friends across decades and multiple manufacturing and distribution channels,” Gale wrote.
